NFPA 70E Labeling

Written by Steve Hudgik

Where do NPFA 70E 2012 labels come from?

Free Arc Flash Guide

NFPA 70E 2012 requires that arc flash labels be field applied. The potential for an arc flash can only be determined when the specific configuration of the equipment and power source is known. This is not something the manufacturer can determine, it can only be known through an arc flash hazard analysis conducted at the location where the equipment is installed.

There are two options for obtaining needed arc flash labels. You can pay an arc flash consultant to print them for you, or you can use a DuraLabel printer to make the NFPA 70E compliant labels you need.

Paying a consultant to make arc flash warning labels is expensive, and when you need new labels you'll need to call in the consultant again.

Using a DuraLabel printer you can make the NFPA 70E labels you need, as you need them. If you need an additional label, or a replacement label, it just takes a few minutes and you have it. No P.O. To issue. No hassles. No problems. If you need an extra large label, just make it. If you need a custom message on an arc flash label, just print it. Having a DuraLabel printer makes your job easy.

Using a DuraLabel Printer To Make NFPA 70E Compliant Labels

DuraLabel printers make creating arc flash labels fast and easy.

  • DuraLabel printers are high quality thermal transfer printers that make durable, long-lasting labels. You can even make arc flash labels that survive tough outdoor conditions including being resistant to sunlight, moisture, outdoor temperature changes and abrasion.
  • In some cases arc flash labels are being installed inside doors in order to protect them from conditions that will degrade the label or cause it to fail. However, this poses a hazard because the warning label cannot be seen until the panel door is opened, and that's too late.  With DuraLabel you can get the right labeling materials to make arc flash labels that last – even in harsh environments.
  • DuraLabel printers include the DuraSuite Software at no extra charge.  You get a complete labeling software package that includes an arc flash labeling database.  You can easily track, print, and reprint your arc flash labels.
  • DuraLabel printers are the only label printers that have extra large, high visibility arc flash die-cut labels available.  When labels need to either be highly visible or readable from a distance, DuraLabel has the right labeling supplies.
  • DuraLabel printers are the only label printers that have a three year warranty, included at no extra charge.
  • DuraLabel printers are the only label printers that come with expert customer service, free for as long as you are a DuraLabel customer, at no extra charge.
  • With a DuraLabel printer not only can you make the arc flash labels you need, you can use the same printer to make all the labels and sign needed throughout your facility. Make pipe markers, NFPA diamond labels, GHS labels, OSHA safety signs and more.  The ROI with a DuraLabel printer is incredibly fast.

What Does NFPA 70E Require For Arc Flash Labeling?

What Does NFPA 70E Require For Arc Flash Labeling?

Based on the results of an arc flash hazard analysis, to be NFPA 70E 2012 compliant the following information must be on the label:

  • At least one of the following:
    • Available incident energy and the corresponding working distance
    • Minimum arc rating of clothing
    • Required level of PPE
    • Highest Hazard/Risk category (HRC) for the equipment
  • Nominal system voltage
  • Arc flash boundary

In many cases existing arc flash labels meet these requirements, in particular if you've already been using a DuraLabel printer and software. However, if you need to upgrade your arc flash labels to be compliant with NFPA 70E 2012, a DuraLabel printer makes the job easy.

NFPA 70Eb 2012 requires that arc flash labels be applied to the following types of equipment:

  • Switchboards
  • Panelboards
  • Industrial control panels
  • Meter socket enclosures
  • Motor control centers

In addition, some employers are labeling electrical equipment, such as bus ducts, that are not included in the above list but may require that live work be done.

When you need labels in your workplace, think DuraLabel. With DuraLabel you make the quality, durable labels you need, when you need them. Call 1-888-326-9244 today.
