This
page will explain how to enter a bar-code into
your text. It is not intended as a comprehensive
introduction to bar-coding. For more detailed
information about bar-codes, please consult
one of the many reference books that are available.
Since
this machine is not specifically designed for
special bar-code label-making, some bar-code
readers may not be able to read the labels.
Bar-codes
should be printed on white labels with black
ink.

The various bar-code parameters enable you to create
more customized bar-codes.

The default settings are: CODE 39, MEDIUM WIDTH,
UNDER# set to ON, and CHECK DIGIT set to OFF.

It
is recommended that bar-codes be printed with
the bar-code WIDTH parameter set to at least
SMALL, otherwise bar-codes may be difficult
to read.
The
CHECK DIGIT parameter is only available with
the CODE 39 and I-2/5 bar-code types.

To enter bar-code data:
Hold
down the CODE key and press the BARCODE key. You'll
see a display that looks like the following:

 To
change the data or parameters of a bar-code
that has already been added to text, position
the cursor below the right half of the bar-code
mark, then hold down CODE and press the BARCODE
key.
To
quit the Bar-code function without adding a
bar-code, press the CANCEL key at any time,
or hold down the CODE key and press the BARCODE
key.

Type
in the new bar-code data or edit the old data
To change the bar-code parameter settings:
Press
the up arrow key to switch to the parameter display.

Press
the left/right cursor keys until the parameter you
want to change is displayed.

To
select the default setting, press the space
bar.
To
return to the bar-code data without changing
any parameters, press the CANCEL key or hold
down the CODE key and press the BARCODE key.

Press
the up or down cursor keys until the desired setting
is displayed.
Repeat
steps 4 and 5 until all parameters are set as you
wish.
Press
the RETURN key.
Including Special Characters:
With protocols CODE39 and CODE128 special
characters can be added to the bar codes. Here's
how to add special characters:
Starting
with the display set to show the label text: push
the left/right cursor keys until the cursor is below
the character immediately to the right of where you
want to add the special character.
Press
the SYMBOL key. You'll see a display similar to the
following:

Push
the up/down cursor keys until the special character
you want to add is displayed.
Press
the RETURN key. The selected character is added to
the bar-code data. If you do not wish to add a special
character, push the CANCEL key to exit without making
any changes.
Press
RETURN to add the bar-code to the text.

To
delete a bar-code, move the cursor so that it
is immediately to the right of the bar-code
mark, or below the right half of the bar-code
mark, then press the BS (back space / clear)
key.
A message asking "OK
TO CLEAR?" will appear. Press the RETURN
key to delete the bar-code. If you do not wish
to delete the bar code, push the CANCEL key.
