New WHMIS Symbols Guide
Graphic Products is now offering a free guide to WHMIS Symbols. The guide shows the eight WHMIS symbols, identifies their class, describes the materials they represent and provides examples of those materials. The guide also provides a description of WHMIS labels.
WHMIS is the hazardous material labeling system used in Canada.
Section 13 of the Hazardous Products Act (HPA) places a legal requirement on the Canadian supplier of a WHMIS controlled product "intended for use in a work place in Canada" to apply a label disclosing prescribed information as a condition of sale. Section 14 of the HPA places a legal requirement on the Canadian importer of a controlled product to apply a label as a condition of importation. Section 23 of the Controlled Products Regulations (CPR) sets out the requirements for an imported controlled product that is to be labelled or repackaged in Canada.
The WHMIS classes of hazardous material include:
Class A: Compressed Gas Class B: Flammable and Combustible Material Class C: Oxidizing Material Class D Div 1: Poisonous and Infectious Material (immediate effects) Class D Div 2: Poisonous and Infectious Material (other) Class D Div 3: Poisonous and Infectious Material (biohazards) Class E: Corrosive Material Class F: Dangerously Reactive Material
The WHMIS guide available from Graphic Products describes each of these classes in more detail.Labels: hazardous materials labeling, WHMIS
