Photoluminescent Marking Required By NFPA Code
Starting in January 2009 changes to the NFPA code require photoluminescent marking of exit stair pathways. In addition, as the result of studies of the evacuation of the World Trade Center, photoluminescent marking is being required by a growing number of municipalities.
Photoluminescent technology provides a way to clearly mark exit pathways and provide emergency information that will be visible in smoky conditions and when lights fail. Since no power is required, photoluminescent labels and signs provide a reliable and safe means to mark pathways, identify hazards, provide directions, and provide needed information during a power outage or an emergency.
A free white paper called: "Introduction to Photoluminescent Labels, Signs, and Path Markings" is available from Graphic Products. It provides background on photoluminescent signs, labels and markings and discusses the various codes that now require this type of marking.
