New Brady PMB71 Label Printer

Brady Worldwide is introducing its latest printer for making industrial labels, the Brady PMP71 Label Printer. Made for industrial labels 1/4" to 2" in width, the PMB71 is capable of printing small die-cut labels for wire marking, cable marking, inventory management and more. The PMB71 also prints pipe markers, OSHA safety labels, office labels on standard vinyl tapes. What Brady has done is provided a new, portable printer intended for narrow application needs, such as the applications just listed. With the Brady PMB71, users will notice it's somewhat of a cross between a HandiMark and a TLS2200, two Brady hand held label printers with which many are already familiar.

New Name for DuraLabel's Most Popular Supply

What was once known as "Standard 3.0 Mil Supply" or "Standard Continuous Vinyl" is now officially known as "Premium Vinyl Tape." Though it has a new name, the properties and benefits of this supply remain the same (3.0 mil, resistant to UV, moisture, abrasion, many chemicals, durable on indoor or outdoor applications, offered in numerous colors, fit for custom labels and signs, etc.).

So what's the reason behind the name change?

Graphic Products recently launched its newest product, the LabPRO Medical Label & Sign Printer--a versatile printer designed for busy medical professionals in hospitals, laboratories and other medical facilities.

To cleverly introduce a few of the many versatile labeling supplies, Graphic Products has released the following transcript taken from a conversation between a prestigious labeling physician, Dr. DuraLabel, and his regular patient, Mr. Mark Pipes.

It's official. Graphic Products is now a dealer of three battery-powered, handheld labelers from Brother^�. The three printers include the Brother P-touch EDGE^� PT-7600, the P-touch EDGE^�PT-7500, and the P-touch PT-7100.

Two printer models, the PT-7600 and the PT-7500, models are branded as P-touch EDGE^� labelers. The P-touch EDGE^� PT-7600 has one nice advantage: it connects to computers for downloading label templates, company logos, and other graphics onto the printer. Both models print on five different tape widths: 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" and 1�. Notable features of the PT-7600/PT-7500 include:

Large 62 point print size
Prints up to 2 lines of text and graphics
164 industrial symbols

"Now that is way easier!"

That's what I said the first time I designed a two-inch label using a DuraLabel 2000 immediately after I designed the same exact two-inch label using a Brady HandiMark. But what's the difference?

With the DuraLabel 2000, a new handheld label printer, there is one feature (among many) that makes it stand out from other handheld label printers: the auto-size feature for text and images.

The auto-size feature on the DuraLabel 2000 exists to simplify and quicken the label designing process. Auto-size automatically adjusts the size of the text and images to fill the entire label area (whether the label consists of one line or many lines). With auto-size enabled on the DuraLabel 2000, the need to manually input the size for each line on a label is eliminated, allowing the user to by-pass an exhaustive and unnecessary �guess-and-check� sizing process often required when designing labels with other printers such as the HandiMark. No matter what size of supply is used, the DuraLabel 2000 recognizes the supply size once it's loaded and automatically auto-sizes inputted text and images so you don't have to.

With the DuraLabel 2000, simply type in the label's message and then hit "PRINT." It's simple, and the label design process is much faster. The result is a nice, bold, readable label!

Custom Label Service gives customers�especially those who may not have the capabilities with their current in-house printer�the flexibility to create custom labels according to their needs by providing a number of online tools meant to simplify the label designing and ordering process.

Prevent Slips, Trips, and Falls with Proper Labeling and Signage

According to the National Safety Council, approximately 12,000 accidental deaths occur each year due to injuries sustained because of a fall. While the most important issue here is lives lost, another issue is the associated economic loss for not only families of fall victims but for organizations.

But there is hope. With the right preparedness, most of these cases can be avoided.

An article entitled "Prevention of Slips, Trips, and Falls" in the April 2008 issue of Facility Safety Management magazine references the Canadian Centre for Occupational Safety and Health, which suggests three general ways to avoid slips, trips, and falls from happening:

Understand how fall accidents happen
Identify trouble areas
Eliminate or minimize hazards of falling

The article goes on to give specific examples and provide more detail, but by simply applying proper safety signs and labels to areas and surfaces where these types of accidents occur, many of these types of accidents can be prevented.

Workplace Hazard Prevention: Move Beyond the Basics

You are an excellent safety manager. For quite a while now, you have not seen or reported an accident or injury in the workplace, and you certainly have not seen any litigation as a result of your negligence to maintaining a safe workplace environment. Congratulations on a job well done! You must be doing everything right... right? Certainly, recent history has been your advocate. But have you considered that you might be getting by on sheer luck and fortunate happenstance?

Beware the perils of complacency!

During times of relative peace and prosperity, it is easy to become complacent and even careless when it comes to our responsibilities. With times, circumstances, environments, policies, and people constantly changing, what is required is continual inspection and stewardship of our workplace environments. One can never be too careful when it comes to workplace hazard prevention.

In an article entitled "Familiarity Breeds Success" in the March 2009 issue of Occupational Health & Safety, Linda J. Sherrard discusses the importance of avoiding complacency as it relates to workplace safety:

"Become familiar with the work environment and the language of potential hazards. This should be more than a once-a-month, 10 minute walk-through! It takes years to really learn a workplace and all the hazards to which employees may be exposed. "

Specifically, being aware of the need for and properly using personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential to workplace hazard prevention.

Are your employees wearing correct PPE?
Should your employees be wearing more PPE items?
Do your employees (including temporary employees, interns) understand specific hazards related to their jobs?
Do you have a process set up for employees and/or supervisors to request and replace PPE items?
Have you considered shared items (e.g., an employee may damage or break a faceshield and hang it back on the rack for the next employee to use)?
Have you considered glare as a hazard (Glare causes mishaps and injuries, fatigue, eyestrain, headaches, aggravation)?

When it comes to workplace hazard prevention, move beyond the basics. Don't just prepare enough to get by, even if your employees have been safe and injury-free as of late. And don't allow shrinking budgets to stand in the way of what is most important in the workplace: the safety of your employees and yourself. Take precautions, become familiar with all of the hazards in your workplace with which employees may be exposed, and take PPE seriously. You'll continue to discover successful results as a reward for your sustained efforts!

This new supply is unique in the fact that it uses fluorescing ink to imprint your image, text, or company logo directly onto label supply. As one of the more discrete security watermarks, the fluorescing ink becomes visible when exposed to a 350nm UV light source. This feature is useful for protecting from counterfeit labels. For example, manufacturers may discover they are offering warrantied services to products not under warranty. Graphic Products is excited to introduce four new labeling supplies for DuraLabel PRO label printers: Circuit-Board Labeling Supply, Extended Life Vinyl, UL^� Label Supply, and High-Temperature Supply (700� F max).

Here is a brief description of each new labeling supply (click on the name of the supply for a link to more information):

Circuit-Board Labeling Supply is a high-temperature polyimide supply ideal for printing labels for circuit boards and other electrical components used in high-tech manufacturing. It is designed to endure exposures to "wave soldering" and commonly used acidic solvents. The topcoat and film provide a high Print Contrast Signal (PCS) for scanning high deposition and condensed bar codes.

Extended Life Vinyl is a thin grade of industrial vinyl only 2.6mil "thick" designed to apply to surfaces where moisture exposure is anticipated. The thin vinyl offers smaller horizontal surfaces, thereby preventing moisture from collecting on the edges. This reduces the tendency to peel. The thinner label design also allows for greater label flexibility, enhancing the supply's ability to better apply to uneven or curved surfaces.

UL^� Label Supply is a durable poly supply specially designed for lasting service in manufacturing and many UL^� 969 required applications. For example, UL^�969 requirements set specifications for labeling materials used for name-plates or markers bearing information, instructions or identification. This supply is to be used with DuraLabel's standard black ribbon.

High-Temperature Supply (700� F max) is a poly supply designed to withstand intermittent temperatures as high as 700� F and as low as -40� F. Made with a durable white topcoat, this supply is engineered for use on high-surface energy plastics like pipes and ducts.
