Biohazard Signs

Making Biohazard Signs and Tags

These pages provide information about safety and hazard warning signs, labels and tags. Select the type of hazard sign you'd like to learn about:

Biological hazard warnings signify the actual or potential presence of a biohazard, and identify equipment, containers, rooms, materials, experimental animals, or any combination of these, which contain, or are contaminated with, viable hazardous agents.

Employee training should properly address the meaning and significance of both the term 'Biohazard' and the biohazard symbol.

Making BIOHAZARD signs: Biohazard signs need to contain the symbol shown to the left, as well as the word "Biohazard" or "Biological Hazard".

The biohazard symbol can be black, fluorescent orange, or orange-red color. Background color is optional as long as there is sufficient contrast for the biohazard symbol to be clearly defined. Appropriate wording should be use in addition to the symbol to identify the nature of the hazard, provide the name of the individual responsible for its control, and to give precautionary information. This information should not be superimposed on the symbol.
