Homer Simpson is a beloved buffoon. The iconic animated character on The Simpsons 26-year series is often the center of workplace accidents. As Safety Inspector and former Nuclear Technician at The Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, Homer provides a clear example of what not to do at work.
The Springfield Nuclear Power Plant is notoriously unsafe, largely due to owner Charles Montgomery Burns' miserliness and Homer's incompetence. A surprise inspection found over 342 violations with an estimated $56 million required to bring the plant up to code.
Notable safety violations include luminous rats in the bowels of the building, pipes and drums leaking radioactive waste, the disposal of waste in a children's playground, plutonium used as a paperweight, cracked cooling towers (fixed in one episode by a piece of chewing gum), and the Emergency Exits are simply painted on.
Despite Homer's shortcomings, he's a great spokesman for safety. Victor House Publications Ltd. captured Homer's comical work escapades in a series of safety posters, first released in 2005 on Safety World. The colorful and officially-licensed posters feature characters from the world of The Simpsons, and use humor as a means to reinforce messages about lockout/tagout, ladder safety, personal protective equipment, and more. You can purchase the posters online at SafetyPoster.com.
